Mr. Berman co-founded Hagens Berman in 1993 and acts as managing partner. He is considered one of the most successful attorneys in the country, representing consumers, investors, and employees in large, complex litigation in state and federal courts. His work in the intellectual property arm of the practice focuses on patent and license litigation.

Mr. Berman has played key roles winning record-breaking settlements in consolidated cases against some of the largest corporations and organizations in the nation, including Big Tobacco, Big Pharma, Big Oil and Wall Street. He was also appointed as special assistant attorney general in the landmark 1998 tobacco lawsuit which resulted in a $206 billion dollar settlement on behalf of plaintiffs in 13 states.

  • 1998 Big Tobacco Litigation
    This litigation eventually led to a $206 billion multi-state settlement, the largest recovery in litigation history.
  • Rio Tinto
    Steve is lead counsel in a landmark Alien Tort Case pitting islanders from Bougainville versus mining giant Rio Tinto.  Steve won three arguments in the Ninth Circuit plus two en banc arguments.  The case is now pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.  The plaintiffs allege that Rio Tinto participated in war crimes and crimes against humanity.

  • Charles Schwab Securities Litigation
    Lead counsel in securities case resulting in $235 million settlement, resulting in 45% and 82% recoveries for the class, high percentages for securities cases.
